FAQs

Why is Net Zero important?

Achieving net zero means balancing the amount of greenhouse gases produced with an equivalent amount removed from the atmosphere. Reaching net zero is vital for avoiding the worst impacts of climate change. General consensus across major governments and scientific bodies is that the world must limit global warming to 1.5°C (as called for in the Paris Agreement) by roughly halving emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050 at the latest.

Is Net Zero the same as Carbon Neutral?

Net Zero involves reducing your emissions to as close to zero as possible before balancing out any remaining emissions through high-quality offsets. Carbon neutrality is about offsetting your entire carbon footprint without first making reductions. The EU is planning to ban ‘climate neutral’ claims by 2026 and the UK is expected to follow suit as there is a high risk of greenwashing. For your business to have a truly impactful climate impact, a net zero pathway focused on carbon reduction is the path forward.

How can businesses set carbon reduction targets and commit to Net Zero?

At Seismic, we recommend the Science Based Targets (SBT) Approach which helps companies set ambitious, credible and scientifically informed carbon reduction targets in line with climate Science. There’s a significant overlap between Net Zero and B Corp, with a SBT approach effectively informing a company’s sustainability strategy. A holistic ESG approach targets social and environmental matters, supporting carbon reduction and B Corp efforts.

How can a business reduce its carbon emissions?

To reduce carbon emissions a company must first accurately measure their carbon footprint to understand their largest emission sources. Then plan a Net Zero pathway focusing on reducing these largest emission sources to company growth from emissions growth. This will take the form of a series of practical recommendations for the company to reduce their emissions, many of these practical actions also receive credit in the B Impact Assessment.
